Search Engine Optimization
FAQs

What is Search Engine
Optimization ( SEO )
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process
of improving the quantity and quality of listings
on search engine result pages (SERP's) for relevant
keyword search terms.
What are Meta Tags
Meta Tags include the "keyword" and
"description" tags in the HTML code
of your website. These tags, not seen by the website
visitor, provide a summary of what the page is
about. Although these tags aren't as important
for rankings as they once were they still remain
an important part of the SEO process. They are
often used to create the title and description
you see next to your name on a search engine result
page.
Will meta tags help
me get higher search engine rankings
Most search engines do not read meta tags.
You must prepare content for search engines
or your site will never achieve high rankings
against the hundreds of millions of web pages
each major search engine holds in its index.
Is Optimization difficult
& can I do this myself
Search engine optimization is not difficult
but it does require a lot of work and patience.
The work part involves making the changes to
your HTML code & page content text or copy
manually, which can take a while. The patience
part involves nothing more than waiting and
monitoring the results of your optimization
in search engines.
How do I optimize my
website
Optimization tools & programs are available
to assist with search engine optimization procedures.
These would include keyword density analysers,
meta tag analysers, spider simulators, keyword
occurrence analyser etc.
You then need to decide exactly which search
keywords or keyphrases you wish to optimize
your site for. It is difficult to optimize a
site for more than 3 or 4 search terms. Try
some keyword suggestion tools to discover which
search terms currently bring you the most traffic
and which terms are queried most with the search
engines.
Search engine optimization varies for each search
engine and can change over time, search engines
'tweak the algorithms' used for returning search
results.
Once you discover what changes you need to make
to your web page, employ those changes to your
page content / code and wait for the search
engine to re-spider your site.
What are spiders, robots
& crawlers
The terms "spiders", "crawlers"
and "robots" all refer to a search
engine program which is designed to 'look at
your website' and analyse all the text found
for each web page.
How quick will my search
engine ranking improve
Search engines usually update once a month.
It may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks before changes
to your site will be reflected in search engines.
The most followed
search engine update is the google update commonly
called the 'google
dance'
